So the desert we hiked through the other day wasn’t like the sandy nothingness I thought it to be as a kid but on Friday we went to the part of the desert that was most certainly like the endless sandpit! And I loved it!
Being a guest in Mexico is the best feeling because the saying “Mi casa es tu casa” is really true. I felt really welcome and at home at Pam’s family home and loved it when we came downstairs on Friday and her aunts and mum were having coffee in the kitchen. Although I started to understand more and more bits and bobs in Spanish, I was enjoying the conversation with Pam’s lovely aunts who live in El Paso and were fine talking English hahaha.
We dressed ourselves in shirts, leggings, high socks and a hat, and together with Pam’s dad and Ruso we drove to the white sand desert dunes! It was about one hour away through the endless desert with mountains in the distance. Following the tip of Pam’s dad, I was eying the roads looking for this little bird they call roadrunners (and secretly hoping to see a snake or coyote from the safety of the car haha) unfortunately without luck but when I looked up, the sandy desert dunes peaked against the dark brown mountains on the horizon, we’re here!!!!
It was Ruso’s first time in the dunes as well and I think we both shared the same love for the place! It’s like a massive playground. Pam and I took of pur shoes and although I could tell my lack of sport the past month, the adrenaline of being there made me run and jump around. The sand felt so soft and the desert stretched about 30miles infront of us! The wind is the architect in this place which made everything you saw a once in a lifetime thing because the dunes are ever changing. The sun was warm and the winds cool, the deeper I moved my feet in the sand, the colder they got. We enjoyed the sun and the blue skies, took pictures and ran around. Rolling of the sandy hills was probably my favourite thing. Fun fact: there is sand everywhere, I still find it in my ears hahaha. There were also people sandboarding which is definitely something to do next time.
When the sun started setting we drove back and quickly changed out of the sandy clothes because it was time to get some food! This time we, Pam, Pam’s dad and me, went to the city centre to also visit the bar where they claim to have invented the very first Margarita! Unfortunately we couldn’t eat there yet cause they were full but we had an amazing dinner a bit down the street. This street looked lovely btw, there where little lights hanging above it and on both sides there were shops and bars. At the end of the street the bridge led you into the USA. This place used to be a very popular spot back in the roaring twenties when Americans didn’t have alcohol so everyone came rushing to Mexico. The restaurant where we had dinner was lovely decorated, Mexican style, and … Hosted a mariachi band and the Northern Quarteto band!! I absolutely loved that music hihi it is happy and people sing along, perfect addition to the atmosphere of the restaurant! We ended the evening with the famous margaritas in the bar called Kentucky. Fun fact about the bar, which was made out of one solid piece of wood, is that in front of the bar, there was a little gap which back in the old days was used to spit the chewed tabacco or pee in…. Lovely these old Men Only inventions hahaha.
